This project started during the pandemic. I had been given a number of cigar boxes quite a few years ago, and I had kept them with the intention to paint on them. The pandemic lock down FINALLY was what got me to dig around in my stuff to find them and start on this project. I have sold nearly all of the paintings I've done so far. I don't paint on cigar boxes except when I feel like it, so if you are interested in one, please email me to get on the waiting list or follow me on Social media.
Each box gets sanded and primed with three coats of primer before I paint the animals in oil on the top of the box. Sometimes, I add some imitation gold leaf to dress them up or hide places that got damaged when I removed the painter's tape.
There is a history of paintings on cigar boxes. Two of my favorite artists, Wayne Thiebaud and Richard Diebenkorn both did paintings on cigar boxes. I always loved the idea of a box for treasures that is a treasure itself. This project is one I am planning to continue. If you are interested in a cigar box painting, please email me. I will add you to the "insiders" list! You can also check my store for available cigar box paintings.
