This is my pandemic project. I had been given a number of cigar boxes quite a few years ago, and I had kept them with the intention to paint on them. The pandemic lock down FINALLY was what got me to dig around in my stuff to find them and start on this project. I have painted 26 of the cigar boxes so far, and every one of them has sold. (Thank you, collectors!)
Each box gets sanded and primed with three coats of primer before I paint the animals in oil on the top of the box.
There is a history of paintings on cigar boxes. I think of two of my favorite artists, Wayne Thiebaud and Richard Diebenkorn, who both did paintings on cigar boxes. I always loved the idea of a box for treasures that is a treasure itself. This project is one I am planning to continue. If you are interested in a cigar box painting, please email me. I will add you to the "insiders" list!
